Workplace Based Assessments for Internationally Trained Physicians
The Physician Assessment Centre of Excellence (PACE) provides workplace‑based assessments for internationally trained physicians looking to practice in Prince Edward Island through our partnership with Nova Scotia. Through structured evaluation of office‑based primary care, PACE helps candidates demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and judgment required to deliver safe, ethical care in Canada.
At the PACE Clinic, Candidates provide primary care to patients while being supervised by experienced family physician assessors. These assessors also serve as the most responsible physician, ensuring patient safety and providing structured evaluation throughout the assessment period.
The assessment environment is designed to closely replicate independent practice. Candidates are provided with the tools, systems, and supports they would typically use in a community-based setting, with the expectation that they will further develop their understanding of the Nova Scotia healthcare system during the assessment. Upon successful completion of the assessment program, candidates will be required to fulfill a Return of Service commitment at the Summerside Community Health Centre or other facility based on physician workforce needs and the terms outlined in their signed Return of Service Agreement.
Eligibility Criteria
The College of Physicians and Surgeons Prince Edward Island, sets the eligibility criteria for participation in the PACE Assessment Program. Health PEI, the College of Physicians and Surgeons Prince Edward Island and PACE assess each application received. The following are the minimum standards for an applicant to be considered:
- Medical degree from a medical school listed on the World Directory of Medical Schools.
- Have successfully completed a post-graduate medical training program.
- Be certified by an organization, recognized by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Prince Edward Island, governing family medicine in another jurisdiction.
- Have a minimum of 12 months of independent practice experience.
- Meet the currency of practice and language proficiency standards of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Prince Edward Island.
