Health PEI is seeking a full-time permanent Plastic Surgeon to join the Provincial Department of Surgery at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown.
Located in Prince Edward Island’s charming capital city, Charlottetown, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, a 243-bed provincial referral facility, is operated by Health PEI, a crown corporation responsible for the delivery of publicly funded health services in Prince Edward Island.

- One (1.0 FTE) permanent position available, commencing immediately.
- The plastic surgery division has 2 surgeons, and the successful candidate will be replacing one of the surgeons.
- Plastic surgery call is 1 in 3 with Halifax supporting PEI call.
- The candidate will have ambulatory care clinic and operating room time with each plastic surgeon having equivalent access to these resources.
- The department will support sub-specialty interests as appropriate.
- The provincial department of surgery is a highly collegial and diverse group of over 30 surgeons practicing at Queen Elizabeth and Prince County Hospitals alongside the department of obstetrics-gynecology.
- Surgical specialties include orthopedics, general surgery, urology, ear-nose-throat surgery, plastic surgery, ophthalmology, and dental surgery.
- Additional surgical services are provided within a surgical network across Halifax, Moncton, and Saint John.
Health PEI offers multiple payment modality options:
- Fee-for-Service – Under this model, physicians are compensated for each service provided, in accordance with the Tariff of Fees outlined in the Physician Services Agreement. This model offers maximum flexibility in terms of scheduling, service volume, and practice style.
Physicians typically operate through a professional corporation, which may offer tax advantages. Most physicians are responsible for overhead costs, which average around 25% of total billings. While this model does not include paid employment benefits, physicians have access to negotiated benefits through the Physician Services Agreement.
- Salary – Physicians employed under the salaried model enter into an employee-employer relationship with Health PEI. This model includes a defined schedule, assigned duties, and a comprehensive suite of employment benefits such as:
- Health and dental coverage
- Paid vacation and sick leave
- Life insurance
- RRSP matching
Compensation: $193.44 per hour (equivalent to $377,208 annually for a 1.0 FTE)
- Contract-for-Service – Physicians working under a Contract for Service are compensated hourly, as outlined in the Physician Services Agreement. While this model does not include traditional employment benefits (e.g., paid vacation, health and dental, RRSP matching), it does provide access to negotiated benefits such as parental leave. The hourly rate includes an additional amount in lieu of benefits.This model may offer tax advantages for physicians who choose to incorporate.
Compensation: $232 per hour (equivalent to $400,200 annually for a 1.0 FTE)
- Full-time hours for a salaried physician is defined as 37.5 hours per week;
- Full-time contract-for-service hours is based on a maximum of 1,725 hours per year; and
- On-call coverage as required.
- Qualified and licensable candidates may be eligible for a return-in-service grant of $100,000 with a 3-year (5,850 hour) commitment to Health PEI;
- Eligible moving expense reimbursement is available;
- Opportunity to teach Medical Learners and Residents with faculty appointment at affiliated universities;
- Access to hospital-based electronic patient record system with lab and x-ray reports from office; and
- Other incentives as per the Physician Services Agreement.
- FRCPC or eligibility for Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certification.
- Eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Prince Edward Island
- Appointment to the Health PEI Medical Staff and appropriate privileging
- Membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA).
- Work experience preferable with at least 1- 2 years of clinical experience working in Canada.
Atlantic Registry
As of May 1, 2023, physicians whose primary practice is in Atlantic Canada (and hold a general registration in either PEI, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia or Newfoundland and Labrador) may be eligible to obtain registration to practice in all four Atlantic Canadian provinces via the Atlantic Registry. Health Care Workers are required to provide proof of Covid-19 vaccination as per Health PEI’s Covid-19 Immunization and Management Policy. If a new hire is unable to be vaccinated as a result of a medical exemption, they will be required to submit supporting documentation to Employee Health / Wellness and Safety.
In the event of a discrepancy in information on this website and the Physician Services Agreement, the Physician Services Agreement shall prevail.
