Health PEI is seeking candidates for full-time permanent Physiatrist positions based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH).

Health PEI is a crown corporation responsible for the delivery of publicly funded health services in PEI.  The successful candidate will join the Rehabilitation Team located in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department of the QEH.  The QEH is a 243-bed provincial referral facility and general hospital. 

The successful candidate will have an opportunity to: practice electrodiagnosis in the QEH EMG Lab in collaboration with our Neurological colleagues; perform inpatient and outpatient consultations and directive care; musculoskeletal evaluation and treatment; and participate in interdisciplinary rehabilitation clinics with our ambulatory teams. The Department has a well equipped rehabilitation clinic including the equipment for ultrasound and needle EMG guided diagnostic and interventional procedures.

  • Full-time: 37.5 hrs/week.
  • Currently our allocation is 2 Physiatrists and therefore on call is not required.

Health PEI offers multiple payment modality options:

  • Fee-for-Service – Under this model, physicians are compensated for each service provided, in accordance with the Tariff of Fees outlined in the Physician Services Agreement. This model offers maximum flexibility in terms of scheduling, service volume, and practice style.
    Physicians typically operate through a professional corporation, which may offer tax advantages. Most physicians are responsible for overhead costs, which average around 25% of total billings. While this model does not include paid employment benefits, physicians have access to negotiated benefits through the Physician Services Agreement.
  • Salary – Physicians employed under the salaried model enter into an employee-employer relationship with Health PEI. This model includes a defined schedule, assigned duties, and a comprehensive suite of employment benefits such as:
    • Health and dental coverage
    • Paid vacation and sick leave
    • Life insurance
    • RRSP matching

 Compensation: $193.44 per hour (equivalent to $377,208 annually for a 1.0 FTE)

  • Contract-for-Service – Physicians working under a Contract for Service are compensated hourly, as outlined in the Physician Services Agreement. While this model does not include traditional employment benefits (e.g., paid vacation, health and dental, RRSP matching), it does provide access to negotiated benefits such as parental leave. The hourly rate includes an additional amount in lieu of benefits.This model may offer tax advantages for physicians who choose to incorporate.

 Compensation: $232 per hour (equivalent to $400,200 annually for a 1.0 FTE)

  • Return-in-Service Grant may be available;
  • Eligible moving expense reimbursement up to $10,000 is available;
  • There is an opportunity to be affiliated with Dalhousie University for Post-Graduate and Under-Graduate teaching. CME via videoteleconference is readily available including regional Physical Medicine Rehabilitation Rounds from Dalhousie/NS Rehabilitation Centre.
  • The provincial Electronic Patient Records System, laboratory services and diagnostic imaging is well developed with access via VPN onsite and in the community. 
  • Other incentives as per the Master Agreement.

Atlantic Registry

Starting May 1, 2023, physicians whose primary practice is in Atlantic Canada (and hold a general registration in either PEI, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia or Newfoundland and Labrador) may be eligible to obtain registration to practice in all four Atlantic Canadian provinces via the Atlantic Registry. Health Care Workers are required to provide proof of Covid-19 vaccination as per Health PEI’s Covid-19 Immunization and Management Policy.
