Orthopedic Surgeon, Father, Medical Leader
“The highlights in my career are when the patients come back and tell me what they are able to do and how the surgery has improved their overall quality of life. To be able to intervene and have such an impact on someone’s functional capacity and quality of life is what makes my job so rewarding.”

Dr. Scott Wotherspoon
Orthopedic Surgeon, Charlottetown
Dr. Scott Wotherspoon is an Orthopedic Surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown. Donna Steele is one of many patients that he has been able to help through joint replacement surgery. She recently shared her story with us:
Donna Steele, a charismatic 72-year-old grandmother of eight, doesn’t usually let anything slow her down. She loves to spend time with her family and enjoys going on bike rides, shopping, and traveling. But when Donna started to experience debilitating knee pain, she began missing out on things she loved to do, even something as simple as going for a walk or getting out of bed in the morning became extremely painful.
“The pain was horrible and made me very uncomfortable,” Donna said. “It eventually got to point that I knew I couldn’t keep living like this. I decided that if I wanted to continue with any quality of life, I had to make a change.”
Donna was referred to Charlottetown Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Scott Wotherspoon. After discussing the risks and benefits of surgery, she had both of her knees replaced.
Although her recovery was difficult at times, soon after her second surgery and rigorous physiotherapy she began to notice an improvement. She started slowly getting back to her old self and was finally able to enjoy life again.
“Dr. Wotherspoon is an excellent surgeon and did an outstanding job. His kind words and encouragement helped tremendously,” Donna said. “I am now able to walk freely with no pain or limitations. He made me feel safe and comfortable while supporting me every step of the way. I would recommend him to anyone I know, and I will be forever grateful. He gave me my life back.”
As we get older, joint degeneration is often something that a healthy diet and active lifestyle can’t prevent. Donna is one of many patients that Dr. Wotherspoon has been able to help restore a quality of life with joint replacement surgery.
